Infertility Support

The journey to build a family can bring deep grief and strain. I offer compassionate support for individuals and couples facing infertility in Sarasota and across Florida and Connecticut.

Infertility Support

When Building a Family Is Harder Than You Imagined

Few journeys carry as much hidden heartache as the path to building a family when that path does not unfold the way you hoped. Month after month, or treatment after treatment, you may find yourself riding a cycle of hope and disappointment that is exhausting in a way words can barely capture. If you are carrying the weight of infertility, I want you to know that your grief is real, your longing is valid, and you do not have to walk this road alone.

I help individuals, partners, and couples navigate the emotional toll of infertility and family building with warmth and steady support. My role is not to give medical guidance or to promise any particular outcome. It is to tend to the very human heart of this experience: the grief, the strain on your relationship, and the identity questions that so often come with it.

You Are Not Alone in This

Infertility can feel intensely isolating. It often unfolds in private, while the world around you seems full of pregnancy announcements, baby showers, and casual questions about when you will start a family. It can feel as though everyone else received a map you were never given. Please hear this: struggling to conceive or to carry a pregnancy is far more common than the silence around it suggests, and the emotional pain it brings is a normal, understandable response to a profound loss.

In my Sarasota practice, I sit with people who are surprised by the depth of their grief and by how much this experience has affected their sense of self, their marriage, and their outlook. This pain is workable. With support, you can move through it with more steadiness, protect your relationship, and reconnect with yourself, whatever the path to parenthood ultimately looks like for you.

The Many Layers of Infertility

Infertility is rarely just a medical matter. It touches nearly every part of life. There is the grief of each cycle that does not end the way you hoped, a loss that repeats and that others often do not recognize. There is the anxiety of appointments, decisions, and waiting. There is the strain on a relationship as two people cope in different ways and carry different fears. And there is the way intimacy itself can change when closeness becomes entangled with timing, pressure, and disappointment, which is a common and understandable response to this kind of stress.

Infertility can also stir up hard feelings that are difficult to admit. You may feel envy toward friends who conceive easily, guilt for that envy, anger at your body, or a sense of failure that runs deep. You may feel distant from a partner who seems to cope differently than you do. Social events can become minefields, and even loving family members may say things that wound without meaning to. All of these reactions are human. None of them make you ungrateful or broken.

There is also a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from living your life in two-week increments, organized around cycles, appointments, and results. Hope builds, then has to be managed, then is either rewarded or grieved, and then the whole process begins again. Over months or years, this rhythm can wear down even the most resilient person. It is common to feel that your body has become a project to be managed rather than a home to live in, and to lose touch with the ordinary pleasures that used to be yours. Naming this out loud, and protecting small pockets of life that are not about fertility, is often an important part of our work together.

What Lies Beneath the Struggle

Underneath the treatments and the timelines, infertility often touches our most tender hopes and our sense of identity. Many people carry a lifelong vision of themselves as a parent, and when that vision is threatened, it can shake the foundation of who they believe they are. There can be grief not only for a hoped-for child but for a whole imagined future.

For couples, infertility can expose differences in how each person grieves and copes. One partner may want to research every option and talk constantly, while the other may cope by pulling inward or staying pragmatic. Each can feel misunderstood or alone, even while lying next to the person they love most. Understanding what is truly underneath the tension, usually fear and grief rather than indifference, helps couples soften toward each other again.

There is also the weight of decisions that have no easy answers, including how long to continue treatment, whether to consider other paths to parenthood, and how to hold onto yourself and your relationship through it all. These are not just logistical choices. They touch values, hopes, and grief, and they deserve a thoughtful, compassionate space.

These decisions are also rarely made once and then settled. They tend to be revisited again and again as circumstances change, and each revisiting can reopen grief and hope at the same time. You may find that you and your partner arrive at readiness for a given step at different moments, which can create real strain even when you both want the same things in the end. Part of what I offer is a steady place to keep having these conversations with care, so that the weight of them does not fall on your relationship in the form of blame or silence. You get to move at a pace you can both live with, and to change your mind as you learn what is true for you.

How I Support You

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist trained in systemic, relational care, and I bring a warm, completely judgment-free presence to this work. Whether you come to me on your own or with your partner, you can bring your grief, your anger, your envy, and your exhaustion, and none of it will be too much for this space.

Our work is talk therapy. We meet in my Sarasota office at MindSpa Integrative Wellness Center or securely by video anywhere in Florida. I do not provide medical or fertility treatment, and I will always encourage you to stay connected with your reproductive medicine team for those matters. What I offer is care for the emotional and relational side of this journey, which is so often left unattended while the medical process takes center stage. Where it is helpful, I am glad to work in coordination with your physicians, because emotional support and medical care work best hand in hand.

I draw on approaches well suited to this experience. Emotionally Focused Therapy and evidence-based couples work help partners understand and bridge their different ways of coping so that infertility draws you closer rather than driving you apart. Internal Family Systems helps you tend to the many parts of yourself, including the part that grieves, the part that hopes, and the part that feels it is failing. Narrative and Solution-Focused approaches help you step back from the story of not being enough and reconnect with your strength, your values, and your sense of self beyond this struggle.

What Working Together Looks Like

Early on, we make room for everything you have been carrying, often alone or in secret. Many people arrive having had to stay strong and hopeful for everyone else, with nowhere to put their real feelings. Simply having a place to be honest can bring real relief.

From there, our work follows what you most need. For couples, we often focus on communication and on protecting your bond through the stress, including finding ways to be close that are not tied to timing or pressure. For individuals, we may focus on grief, identity, anxiety, and self-compassion. We can work through the hard decisions together, not by my telling you what to choose, but by helping you find clarity that aligns with your values. And we tend to the daily toll, including the appointments, the waiting, and the moments that catch you off guard.

One tender area that often goes unspoken is what happens to physical closeness when intimacy becomes tied to timing and outcomes. When closeness starts to feel like a task on a calendar, it is understandable that it can lose its warmth and spontaneity, and that both partners can begin to feel pressure where there used to be play. This is one of the most common and least talked about effects of the fertility journey. Together we can gently separate connection from obligation, so that affection and closeness have room to exist for their own sake again, independent of any goal. Reclaiming that can be quietly healing for a couple, whatever else is happening on the medical front.

Throughout, I hold hope and care for you no matter where your path leads. Whether your journey ends with a pregnancy, another route to parenthood, or a life you build in a different shape than you first imagined, you deserve to come through it with your heart and your relationship intact.

Reassurance for Your Heart

There is nothing wrong with you for hurting this much, for feeling envy, or for grieving something others cannot see. Your longing for a family is a beautiful thing, and the pain you feel is the measure of that love, not a flaw in your character. You are not failing, and you are not alone.

If infertility has strained your relationship, that too can heal. Many couples discover, with support, that facing this together deepens their bond and their compassion for one another in ways that carry into every part of their life.

An Invitation to Begin

You do not have to carry this in silence, and you do not have to have it all figured out. Reaching out for support is an act of care for yourself and your relationship, and it is often the first breath of relief on a long road. My hope is that, whatever this journey holds, you can stay connected to yourself, to your partner, and to the possibility of living your greatest love story.

I offer a free, confidential consultation where you can share what you are facing, ask any questions, and see whether we are a good fit, with no pressure at all. Whether we meet in person in Sarasota or by secure video from anywhere in Florida, you will be met with warmth and respect. When you are ready, I would be honored to support you.

Common questions

Questions about Infertility Support

How can therapy help while we are going through infertility treatment?
Infertility can bring grief, anxiety, and a sense of isolation that touches nearly every part of daily life. In our sessions I offer a steady, compassionate space to process those feelings, using approaches like EFT and IFS to help you stay emotionally connected to yourself and your partner. My work supports your emotional wellbeing alongside the medical care your fertility team provides.
The fertility journey is straining our relationship. Can you help us as a couple?
Yes, and this is one of the most common reasons couples reach out to me. Timed intimacy, financial pressure, and repeated disappointment can leave partners feeling disconnected or blamed, and I use evidence-based couples work and EFT methods to rebuild communication and closeness. My goal is to help you face this challenge as a team rather than letting it drive a wedge between you.
I feel so much shame that my body is not conceiving. Is that normal?
Those feelings are extremely common and understandable, even though infertility is a medical reality and not a personal failing. Much of my work centers on reducing shame and self-blame so you can treat yourself with more kindness during an already hard season. Together we gently separate your worth as a person from an outcome your body does not fully control.
Do you work with the medical side of infertility, or only the emotions?
My sessions are talk therapy focused on the emotional and relational side of infertility, and I do not provide medical testing or treatment. I regularly coordinate with reproductive endocrinologists, OB-GYNs, and fertility clinics so your care feels connected. If a medical cause is part of your story, I encourage keeping your physicians in the loop while we support the human experience alongside it.
Can you help if we are deciding whether to stop treatment or explore other paths?
Absolutely, and these are deeply personal decisions that deserve space and care. Using Solution-Focused and Narrative approaches, I help you weigh options like continued treatment, donor paths, adoption, or a child-free life without pressure toward any particular choice. My role is to help you and your partner find clarity that feels true to your values.

In their words

★★★★★
The fear of not being able to climax, and the pain I sometimes felt, made everything worse - my body basically refused it. Wendy helped me spot the negative beliefs that were getting in the way. Now I feel comfortable in my own skin, and we communicate so much more openly. We relax, explore, and actually have fun.

★★★★★
I'd tried the enhancement drugs but hated the headaches and the fear that one day nothing would work. Wendy helped me redirect my focus toward pleasure and intimacy instead of performance. I didn't realize how much stress I'd been carrying until the weight lifted. Now I have the tools to move forward with confidence.

★★★★★
One night over dinner my husband suggested divorce and I was completely blindsided. A week later I reached out to Wendy. She helped us revisit the “taboo” conflicts we'd brushed under the rug for years. Our marriage is better than it's ever been - we've grown closer and more intimate than I thought possible.
