Sex Therapy

The Conversation You Have Been Waiting to Have

There is a whole category of human experience that most of us were never given permission to talk about. We learn to discuss our jobs, our families, our health, and our worries. But when it comes to sex, desire, and intimacy, many of us were handed silence, shame, or a set of confusing messages that never quite added up. So we carry our questions quietly. We wonder if something is wrong with us. We assume everyone else has figured out what we have not.

I want you to know that you are not broken, and you are not alone. As a licensed marriage and family therapist and an AASECT-certified sex therapist here in Sarasota, I help individuals and couples talk about the things that often go unspoken. The concerns people bring to me are some of the most common human experiences there are, and yet they are also some of the most private. My work is to make that private conversation feel safe, ordinary, and full of possibility.

What Sex Therapy Actually Is

Let me clear up the most common misunderstanding right away. Sex therapy is talk therapy. There is never any physical contact, never any nudity, never any examination or demonstration of any kind. You and I sit and talk, the same way we would in any other kind of counseling. What makes it sex therapy is simply that we have made room to discuss sexuality directly, thoughtfully, and without embarrassment.

That distinction matters, because the fear of the unknown keeps so many people from reaching out. When you understand that this is a conversation, held in a professional and respectful space, the door opens. We explore your history, your relationships, your body, your beliefs, and your hopes. We look at the story you have inherited about sex and the story you would like to be living instead.

I practice from a sex-positive, systemic, and relational perspective. That means I do not approach your sexuality as a problem to be corrected against some narrow standard. I approach it as a meaningful part of who you are, shaped by your biology, your experiences, your culture, and your relationships. My job is not to judge. My job is to help you understand yourself and move toward the intimacy and satisfaction you are longing for.

The Concerns People Bring to Me

People come to sex therapy for many reasons, and no reason is too small or too complicated. Some of the most frequent concerns I help with include the following.

Low or Mismatched Desire

Many people worry that they should want intimacy more than they do, or they feel out of sync with a partner whose desire runs on a different rhythm. Desire is not a simple on-off switch. It responds to stress, sleep, hormones, resentment, safety, and the emotional climate of a relationship. When two partners have different levels or styles of desire, it is not a sign that love has failed. It is a puzzle we can understand and work with.

Arousal and Erectile Difficulties

Bodies do not always respond the way we expect or wish, and when arousal becomes unpredictable, anxiety often follows. That anxiety can then make the difficulty worse, creating a frustrating cycle. Together we untangle the physical, emotional, and relational threads, and I coordinate with medical providers when a health factor may be involved.

Orgasm Challenges

Difficulty reaching orgasm, or changes in that experience over time, can leave people feeling discouraged or disconnected from pleasure. We explore what is happening with curiosity rather than pressure, because pressure is often part of what gets in the way in the first place.

Painful Sex

When intimacy hurts, it deserves real attention and care. Pain has many possible sources, and it often carries emotional weight as well. I work alongside your physicians and, when helpful, pelvic health specialists, while we address the fear, guarding, and distress that pain can create.

Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior

Some people feel that their sexual behavior has become something they cannot steer, and it is causing pain to themselves or the people they love. This is a place of deep shame for many, and it is exactly the kind of concern that thrives in secrecy. In therapy we bring it into the light with compassion, understand what it is doing for you, and build a healthier relationship with your own choices.

Intimacy After Medical or Life Transitions

Illness, surgery, medication changes, pregnancy, menopause, aging, grief, and other major transitions can all reshape your sexual self. What used to feel natural may feel unfamiliar. This is a season for gentleness and rediscovery, not for grieving a version of yourself that is gone for good.

What Is Underneath the Concern

Almost every sexual concern that walks through my door is connected to something larger. Sometimes it is anxiety or perfectionism. Sometimes it is old shame absorbed in childhood or adolescence. Sometimes it is a relationship where hurt has quietly accumulated and closeness has become unsafe. Sometimes it is a body that has changed, and a sense of self that has not yet caught up.

This is why I do not treat symptoms in isolation. A sexual difficulty is rarely just about sex. It is a message from the whole system of your life, and when we listen to that message together, the path forward becomes clearer. Very often the couples and individuals I work with discover that as they heal the deeper layer, the sexual concern begins to soften on its own.

My Approach and What Working Together Looks Like

Our first conversations are about understanding. I want to know your story, your history, and what you are hoping for. There is no rushing, and there is no script you have to follow. You share what you are ready to share, and we build trust at a pace that feels right to you.

I draw on several evidence-based approaches, including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, narrative therapy, and solution-focused work. In plain terms, that means I help you understand the emotions underneath your patterns, communicate in ways that bring you closer, make peace with the different parts of yourself, and rewrite the beliefs that have been holding you back.

For couples, much of our work is about creating a space where both partners feel heard and neither one feels blamed. For individuals, our work often centers on the relationship you have with yourself, your body, and your history. In both cases, I bring warmth, real expertise, and a steady belief that things can get better.

Between sessions, I may suggest gentle reflections or conversations to try at home. These are always invitations, never demands, and always things you do privately in your own life. Nothing physical ever happens in my office. Our work happens through conversation, insight, and practice in your own time.

Common Worries About Starting

People often arrive with the same quiet fears, and I want to speak to them directly. Some worry that they will be judged for their history, their desires, or their choices. I can promise you that judgment has no place in my office. I have heard a great deal in my years of practice, and my response is always understanding, never shock or disapproval.

Others worry that they will not know what to say, or that they will feel too embarrassed to speak. That is completely understandable, and you do not have to walk in with the right words. Part of my role is to help you find language for experiences that have never had words before. We go slowly, and you are always in control of what you share and when.

Some people worry that raising a sexual concern means their relationship is failing, or that their partner will feel blamed. In truth, addressing these concerns together is one of the most caring things partners can do for each other. Rather than driving a wedge, this work usually brings couples closer, because it replaces silence and assumption with honesty and teamwork.

And a great many people simply worry that they are the only one facing this. You are not. The concerns I described above are remarkably common, and the fact that no one talks about them openly is exactly why they feel so isolating. Bringing yours into a confidential, professional space is often the beginning of real relief.

The Role of the Body and Medical Care

Sexuality lives at the meeting point of mind and body, and sometimes physical health plays a genuine role in the concerns people bring me. Hormones, medications, chronic conditions, and other medical factors can all influence desire, arousal, comfort, and response. When that is the case, I am glad to work alongside your physicians and other providers so that you are supported from every angle. You never have to sort out which piece is physical and which is emotional on your own. We look at the whole picture together, and I help you connect with the right care when a medical consultation would help.

You Deserve to Feel at Ease

If you have been carrying a sexual concern in silence, I want you to know how normal that is, and how much lighter it can feel to finally set it down in a safe place. So many of my clients tell me that the hardest part was making the first call, and that once they did, they wished they had done it sooner.

Your sexuality is a part of your whole self, and it is worthy of care, honesty, and even joy. Whatever you are facing, it can be understood, and you do not have to figure it out alone.

Common questions

Questions about Sex Therapy

Will I ever have to undress or be physically examined in sex therapy?
No. My sessions are entirely talk-based, and there is never any physical examination, undressing, or touch of any kind. We work together through conversation, education, and practical strategies, and any at-home suggestions are always yours to accept or decline in complete privacy.
What kinds of concerns do people actually bring to sex therapy?
People come to me about mismatched desire, difficulty with arousal or satisfaction, discomfort or pain that has a physical or emotional root, and reconnecting after distance in a relationship. Others simply want to feel more at ease and confident with their own sexuality. Whatever brings you in, my goal is to help you feel understood rather than judged.
Do you work with medical doctors when a physical issue might be involved?
Yes, and I encourage it when a medical cause may be part of the picture. Concerns like pain, hormonal shifts, or medication side effects often deserve evaluation by your physician or a specialist, and I am glad to coordinate care with your permission. This team approach helps make sure nothing important is overlooked.
How long does sex therapy usually take before I notice a difference?
Every person and situation is different, so I do not promise a fixed timeline, but many clients begin to feel relief once we understand the full picture together. Some concerns resolve in a handful of sessions, while deeper patterns take longer to unwind. We check in regularly so you always know how your progress feels to you.
Is sex therapy only for people who are in a relationship?
Not at all. I work with individuals and couples alike, and many of my individual clients are single people who want to understand themselves better or heal from past experiences. Your therapy is built around your life and goals, whether or not a partner is involved.

In their words

★★★★★
The fear of not being able to climax, and the pain I sometimes felt, made everything worse - my body basically refused it. Wendy helped me spot the negative beliefs that were getting in the way. Now I feel comfortable in my own skin, and we communicate so much more openly. We relax, explore, and actually have fun.

★★★★★
I'd tried the enhancement drugs but hated the headaches and the fear that one day nothing would work. Wendy helped me redirect my focus toward pleasure and intimacy instead of performance. I didn't realize how much stress I'd been carrying until the weight lifted. Now I have the tools to move forward with confidence.

One night over dinner my husband suggested divorce and I was completely blindsided. A week later I reached out to Wendy. She helped us revisit the “taboo” conflicts we'd brushed under the rug for years. Our marriage is better than it's ever been - we've grown closer and more intimate than I thought possible.
