Love that does not fit one mold
There is no single blueprint for a meaningful relationship, though our culture often speaks as though there were. Some people find that the traditional template of lifelong, exclusive partnership fits them beautifully. Others discover, sometimes early and sometimes after years of trying to make the standard model work, that their most honest life looks different. Open relationships, polyamory, relationship anarchy, solo partnership, and other consensually non-monogamous or non-traditional structures are ways that many thoughtful, caring people choose to build love and family.
I am Wendy Haggerty, a licensed marriage and family therapist and AASECT-certified sex therapist in Sarasota. I offer a genuinely affirming space for people exploring alternative love styles, whether you have lived this way for years, are opening a relationship for the first time, or are simply wondering whether a different structure might fit who you actually are. My role is not to steer you toward any particular arrangement. It is to help you build whatever you choose on a foundation of honesty, care, and clear agreements.
You are not a problem to be solved
Many people who practice consensual non-monogamy have had the discouraging experience of a therapist who treated their relationship structure as the automatic source of any difficulty, or who quietly assumed the goal was to return to monogamy. That is not how I work. Non-traditional relationships are a valid way of loving, and the ordinary challenges that arise within them deserve skilled, respectful attention rather than a raised eyebrow.
At the same time, these relationships are not free of the difficulties that any relationship faces. Jealousy, time and energy management, communication breakdowns, differing needs, insecurity, and the pressure of doing something that friends and family may not understand can all create real strain. Working with a therapist who understands the landscape means you can spend our time solving the actual problem instead of explaining or defending your whole way of life first.
What often brings people in
People come to me for many reasons within this work. Some are in an established partnership and considering opening it, and they want help thinking that decision through carefully rather than in the heat of a moment. Some are already practicing non-monogamy and are navigating a specific challenge, like a new connection that has stirred up unexpected feelings, or a sense that agreements need to be revisited. Some are individuals figuring out what they want and whether they can ask for it without losing the people they love.
Others are couples where one partner longs for a more open structure and the other feels frightened by the idea. That difference in desire is one of the tender places I help people navigate, because it touches on core questions of security, fairness, and what each person needs to feel safe. There are no villains in that conversation, only two people trying to be honest about who they are.
What is often underneath
When difficulty arises in an alternative relationship, the structure itself is frequently not the root of the trouble. Underneath the presenting concern we often find the same human material that lives in every relationship: attachment fears, old wounds around abandonment or not being chosen, difficulty asking directly for what we need, and agreements that were made vaguely and then collided with reality. Jealousy, for instance, is rarely just jealousy. It is often a signal pointing toward an unmet need or an unspoken fear that, once named, becomes something a couple can actually address.
In our work together I help you listen to these signals rather than being ruled by them. Emotions that feel like threats to the relationship often turn out to be invitations toward a deeper conversation. When partners learn to hear each other's underlying needs, the structure they have chosen becomes far more livable.
How I work with alternative love styles
I draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy to help partners understand the emotional cycles they get caught in and to help them reach for each other with more security. This work is just as relevant to non-monogamous relationships as to monogamous ones, because attachment matters no matter how many people are in the constellation. Evidence-based couples work gives us practical tools for communication, for turning toward each other, and for building the kind of trust that lets openness feel safe rather than threatening.
Internal Family Systems is often especially useful here. Most of us contain a part that wants freedom and a part that wants security, a part that feels adventurous and a part that feels afraid. Rather than letting those parts fight for control, we can help them work together so that your choices come from a settled, whole place rather than from one loud voice drowning out the others. Narrative Therapy helps you author your own relationship story rather than living inside the assumptions handed to you by a culture that only recognized one shape of love.
Much of our practical work centers on communication and agreements. Successful non-traditional relationships tend to run on unusually clear, honest, and regularly revisited understandings. I help partners talk about the things that are hardest to talk about: boundaries, disclosure, time, emotional connection, and what to do when feelings shift. These conversations are skills, and skills can be learned.
Opening a relationship thoughtfully
One of the most delicate transitions I help with is the decision to open a relationship that has been monogamous. This is a significant change, and it deserves careful, unhurried thought rather than an impulsive leap or a reluctant concession. When one partner wants more openness and the other feels hesitant, the conversation can quickly become a tug of war in which one person feels pressured and the other feels rejected. My role is to slow that dynamic down and help both people feel heard.
In this work we explore what each partner is truly hoping for and what each is truly afraid of. We look at the difference between opening a relationship as a way to add something joyful and opening one as a way to avoid dealing with existing problems, because those are very different starting points and they tend to lead to very different outcomes. We talk honestly about pace, about boundaries, and about what each person will need in order to feel secure along the way. Some couples decide to move forward, some decide the timing is not right, and some discover a middle path they had not previously imagined. What matters is that the decision is made together, with clear eyes, rather than under pressure or in avoidance.
Facing outside judgment
Many people in non-traditional relationships carry an extra weight that has nothing to do with the relationship itself: the strain of doing something that friends, family, or the surrounding culture may not understand or accept. Deciding who to tell, how to handle disapproval, and how to protect your relationship from outside scrutiny can be genuinely stressful. This stigma is real, and it can seep into how you feel about yourself and your choices even when the relationship is healthy and fulfilling.
In our work I help you build resilience against that external pressure and sort out your own values from the judgments handed to you by others. You get to decide how open to be and with whom, and you deserve support in navigating those choices with confidence rather than shame. A relationship that works for the people inside it does not require anyone else's approval to be valid.
For individuals
You do not need to bring a partner to do this work. Many people meet with me alone to explore their own relationship orientation, to build confidence in asking for what they want, or to heal from experiences where their needs were dismissed. Understanding yourself clearly is one of the most generous things you can offer any relationship you enter.
A judgment-free, confidential space
Everything you share with me is confidential, and my stance is sex-positive and free of judgment. Our sessions are talk therapy. There is never any physical exam, any undressing, or any touch, and you never have to justify who you are or how you love in order to be met with respect. My commitment is to reduce shame, expand your sense of possibility, and help you move toward connection, safety, and authenticity in whatever form fits you.
When concerns arise that involve physical or medical questions, I coordinate with medical providers as appropriate. Therapy with me supports the emotional and relational dimension of your life and is not a substitute for medical care.
Building something honest
The couples and individuals I work with in this area are often some of the most intentional people I meet, precisely because a non-traditional life requires ongoing honesty. You cannot coast on assumption when you have chosen a path the culture did not map for you. That intentionality is demanding, and it is also a gift, because it tends to produce relationships built on real agreement rather than inherited default.
Whether you are opening a relationship, deepening an existing structure, or simply trying to understand yourself, you deserve a therapist who brings knowledge and warmth rather than surprise or discomfort. In Sarasota we can meet in person at MindSpa Integrative Wellness Center, or we can work together virtually from anywhere in Florida.
